Thank you so much for sharing your perspective here - and for sharing those amazing photos! Everyone's dad really did have the same mustache in the 80s-90s huh? Maybe that's the most American thing of all!
The patriotic zeal of new citizens- yes! Endearing indeed. We had the same green Dodge Dart. And the flag- crazy that so many who call themselves patriots would treat the flag with such disrespect. Technically it is actually illegal to wear the flag (on clothing, crotches, and more) or duplicate it on merchandise- yet this is a law that has always been ignored. Too much money in it, I suppose and too hard to enforce.
Jan, I just love that you also had a Dodge dart. The amazing coda about this beautiful car is that it met an untimely death (as first-time car owners they didnt have a clue about basic maintenance like..oil changes), at which point my parents donated it to a local Demolition Derby (and what could be more "American" than a car rally/monster truck situation?! 🤣)
Ours had one short thick string of plastic coming out of the frame by the front window. I claimed it was her hair and declared she needed a name, a proper name. Dolly? Daisy? No, not my family’s personality. So alas, hair and all, she remained nameless.
I love this. I’m a therapist who works mostly with the Indian women who are born to immigrants. And I am also a birthright citizen. Grateful I ran across your work!

Yes the flag gear is so ubiquitous!
