Because your Tuesday deserves a soundtrack: let’s start by throwing on the dulcet tones of the playlist from our weekly radio show Assisted Living. You can hear the LIVE version each week by tuning into Electromagnetic Radio on Sunday evening 6-8PM NYC time.
This week, a special announcement:
Season TWO of our podcast about chosen family premieres MAY 14, 2024. We will look at the expansive ways people relate to one another in the modern world (in community, family, partnership, romance).
The backstory:
We’ve produced our podcast “Don’t Think Twice,” for years now. The title of the show is as much an admonishment to ourselves as to our listeners. Each episode, we would recite this tagline: “if you’re thinking of making the leap off the beaten path, our inexpert advice is: don’t think twice!” It was our entreaty to think outside the box as freelancers, take risks, and build a life we wanted.
For its first ~40 episodes (from 2017-2023) it had a wide lens, and we liked it that way. When we considered what it means to live a “freelance life,” it involved unorthodox choices in our careers, in our personal lives, our love lives, in our creative lives -- and we covered it all.
In practice, it was the audio version of happy hour: two best friends catching each other up, cracking each other up, and unintentionally creating an audio diary throughout some formative years of our friendship. Let’s call those first 41 episodes of the show “Season Zero” – foundational and central, fun and ridiculous, at points disgusting to listen to, as Andrew has a chewing-snacks-into-the-microphone problem.
Last year, while Amrita was pregnant, we released 10 episodes of Don’t Think Twice that centered on our decision to have a baby together as friends. SEASON 1 of “baby-sodes,” if you will (and even if you won’t!), was a new mode of free-range living for us. We explored facets of our unconventional choice ranging from legal issues to unsatisfactory pornography at the sperm bank.
Our son Aadi is now nearly 1 year old. Have we changed over the past year? Did expectation match reality? What is the wider societal context of our non-nuclear family, and who are the others leading the way? How does our non-traditional setup fit in with broader concepts of family, aging, and art-making?
We’ll get into it all, every other Tuesday starting MAY 14, just in time for Aadi’s first birthday.
We invite you to catch up on these 10 snappy episodes of Season 1 in the meantime, and excited for you to join us at the table for Season 2 soon.
